2009 Catalog Cover Art Competition Winner
A Letter from the Artist, Amy Law

Studious insects read about fish… Ants cook up a delicious pot of prize-winning chili… a spotted pincushion crouches quietly in a corner… These are just a few of the creatures that inhabit my portfolio! Whether I'm working in a quirky illustrative style or dreamlike washes and renderings, I love to include all sorts of strange beasts. Sparked by curiosity about the secret life of objects and animals (including my two bad cats, who think they are people), I frequently give my subjects unfamiliar tasks and unusual surroundings. Given my love for fiber arts, adding a sheep to the menagerie seemed appropriate. The thriving creative community here in Baltimore brought the perfect theme to mind… the hip Baltimore Hon!
In addition to my passion for painting, I am also a freelance graphic designer and dedicated crafter. My love affair with fiber arts has been encouraged not only by my crafty mom Kathy but also my Aunt Betsy, who first introduced me to the Sheep & Wool Festival and continues to add to my wool stash whenever I see her. Recently I've started mixing my drawing and fiber skills in some freehand embroidered pieces, and am excited to see where they lead. I can't wait to see what new materials and inspiration this year's festival has in store!
