A native of Cecil County, Maryland, Dr. Richard Barczewski has influenced and benefited the Maryland Sheep Industry for many years. For the last 25 years, Rich has assisted David Greene with the Maryland Shearing Schools, teaching sheep shearing to numerous students. His column in the DelMarVa Farmer promotes good agricultural practices and often addresses issues relating to our industry.

2008 marks the 15th year that Rich Barczewski will manage the Maryland Wool Pool. Every single wool producer in Maryland has benefited from his organizational skills, days of hard work, and innovative wool marketing practices.

Rich showed Suffolk sheep while in 4-H. In his teens, he managed the“Animal World” exhibit at the Maryland State Fair. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland and is currently a tenured associate professor and chairman for the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Delaware State University.

In May 2007, Dr. Barczewski received The Faculty Excellence Award for Service
from the University. They said: “His dedication and commitment to the Agricultural community, as well as the University . . . have enhanced not only the University but also the field of animal husbandry.”

Dr. Barczewski’s “Hands-on Basic Shepherding” workshops at the Maryland
Sheep & Wool Festival have filled with
prospective shepherds for the last 5 years.

This year he will teach two more sessions.

Rich currently lives in Smyrna,
Delaware with his wife, Ruthie, a practicing veterinarian, two sons, Adam and Stephen (usually with him at the Wool Pool) and a daughter Sarah.
We are honored to have such a tireless
and talented supporter of our industry.
