Eighth Annual Mamie Francis Blanket Competition
A $5,000 endowment funds a $500 Grand Prize Award in the Mamie Francis Blanket Competition. Mamie was a weaver of small blankets or lap robes. She is remembered by her husband, daughter and three sons with this endowment. This $500 prize was awarded to Joyce Keister in 2010. Contributing $100 each for checks or prizes in this competition are: Harrisville Designs, Interweave Press, Sandy Spring Bank and The Mannings Handweaving School & Supply Center.
The “FREDDIE” Award
2011 marks the 17th annual “Freddie” Award. This cash award goes to the weaver of the most creative handwoven article entered in the Skein & Garment Competition. This award is funded by an endowment from the family and friends of Mary Fredrika Pfeiffer, an avid Festival supporter. The “Freddie” Award continues her encouragement of excellence in handweaving.
Barbara Volk won this honor in 2010.
Pat Brown Memorial Award
To honor an ardent Festival fan, a group of Maryland spinners funded the Pat Brown Memorial Award for the Best Maryland Fleece in the Fleece Show. A Kent Island shepherd and critter lover, Pat Brown was a multi-talented artist.
A permanent plaque is displayed annually at the Fleece Show. In 2010 the Revere pewter cup and cash award were won by Deborah Paper with a Romney Cross fleece.
Dedication
Mary Streaker
Mary Streaker came to be chairman of the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival in the early 1980s when Charlotte Gardener retired as chair. At that time, Mary lived on the farm next to the Howard County Fairgrounds and was involved in the running of a farm and raising a family. Among her qualifications for leading the Festival were a life-long love of fairs and the power to lead a group of volunteers. In the early years, the Festival was a very small affair; the entire event fit in the main exhibition hall and was held there until the winter when the roof caved in. Rather than stopping the Festival, Mary had the energy and vision to nurture the event and shepherd it along to become the Festival that it is today. Mary put in countless hours of dreaming, planning, and organizing, allowing it to grow and blossom.

She has the natural ability to get along with more people than anyone I know and I have learned much from her example. Mary has pulled many members of the Streaker clan into the Festival over the years. She always said that she was preparing them for a life of service to others. Several of Mary’s grandchildren can be seen working behind the scenes on Festival weekend. Mary served as chairman until the spring of 1992 when she asked me to take over her job. Mary continued to stand by my side and guide me on as the leader of this amazing event. Today Mary runs the photo department at the Festival, is chairman of the home arts department at the Howard County fair, and is an active member of the Howard County fair board as well. I continue to look to Mary for her guidance, wisdom, and strength.
Thank you, Mary, for all the love and care you have given this wonderful event, making it the most successful of its kind anywhere in the world.
